If your job search has been coming up empty and you can’t find work, consider rethinking your job search strategies.  While there may be many places that are currently not hiring, still put your resume in with them so if they are looking in the future they will already have your name and information on file.  Do not let the lack of options dissuade you.  The job search may fill an immediate need but the career search is like playing the long game.  This is not just for the here and now but for the long term.  Make sure that you take some time to search around in places you usually wouldn’t, there may be a diamond in the rough.  There may be an employer who is willing to train the right person who has not yet come along.


Use Social Media

Take advantage of all the resources LinkedIn has to offer.  You can use the Question and Answer area of the site to demonstrate your expertise in your field.  Also, you can communicate with other users and make vital contacts.

Dress for Success

While you may be applying for a job at a factory, dress as the factory manager would.  Many employers are looking at what you show up in.  It does not matter that the job is casual, it’s best that you overdress, rather than under-dressing.


Prepare Before Your Arrival

Before you arrive at your interview, formulate two or more questions to ask.  You will almost always be asked if there are any questions.  You should consider the different aspects of the work environment that you aren’t capable of learning without first-hand experience.  Bring several copies of your resume with you on the day of your interview.  This is very important as you will need this to present to the person interviewing you.  Also, you can look over your resume before the meet, as a lot of the questions will come off of this document.


Advocate for Yourself

If you are looking to move up in a company don’t be shy about talking to management when you have an idea.  At the same time, don’t overdo it.  By going there with genuinely good ideas that you believe will help the company, they will naturally want you closer to them to assist, as such increasing your pay scale.

When you have an interview, the most important factor is to be on time.  Punctuality shows a lot about your work ethic and how valuable of an employee you will truly be.  Arrive at your interview at least 30 minutes before it starts to show that you mean business to your future employer.

When interviewing for a job, do some research on the company you’re applying to.  You should ask yourself how much you actually know about the company beforehand.  You should know a lot about it, including some history, important accomplishments, recent events, etc.  Most of this information can be easily found online. Looking knowledgeable about a company during an interview can increase your chances of getting the position.
