Leadership is a position that takes time to work up to.  You may have to put in a lot of time and effort into working your way up the ranks.  You should strive to display many characteristics such as responsibly, teamwork, honesty and being a team player.  These 11 tips for better business leadership can give you pointers in how to work your way through the ranks and get you on your way to being the next business leader.

Listen to Your Staff

Focused listening.

You may be a visionary with excellent insight into your company’s market sector, but you don’t know everything.  Your subordinates may be in more intimate contact with part of the market as part of their job.  If your marketing director says that your advertising isn’t appropriate for your target audience, listen to her.  She’s probably right.

Personal Development

When working to improve in the area of leadership, it is vital that you develop competency.  People need to trust that you know what you are doing in order to feel confident in your leadership ability.  Instill confidence in those who follow you by finding a mentor to help you become truly proficient in what you do.

Learn to improve your effectiveness as a leader by developing yourself as a trustworthy individual.  Trust is essential to giving others confidence in your ability and willingness to do and say the right thing for the right reasons.  Apologize if you discover you have been inconsistent or have made a mistake.  Lying or mis-directing blame diminishes you in the eyes of followers.

Develop Trust

Building trust.

One of the most important aspects of any leader is the ability to create a sense of trust among their employees.  Employees who trust their supervisor are willing to do more to help the company succeed than those who do not trust their supervisors.  Always be truthful when dealing with employees.

Work on building trust with the people that work with you.  People need to feel that they can trust their leader.  This can motivate them to succeed and help build cooperation and understanding in the company.  You should inspire others so that their trust in you can help tasks get completed properly.

Plan your Work; Work your Plan.

Stick with your goal. One way that leaders tend to fail is that they “switch sides”; when things get tough.  Try to stick with the goals you’ve established, and do what you can to stay on one path until completion.  You may have to eventually change paths, but do so carefully and avoid doing it too much.  Constantly changing paths can make you appear confused and undetermined to others.

Remember your Attitude

How you behave will directly affect how your employees conduct themselves in the office.  A leader that is hostile and aggressive can expect a combative atmosphere and lack of trust in the workplace.  By displaying confidence and remaining calm in tense situations you set a positive example for your employees to follow.

Work Play Balance

Build play time into work time.  Not every moment of the day needs to be filled with productivity.  Smart leadership will find ways for employees to let go every once in a while.  It can be an outdoor activity or an indoor game room, or something else entirely.  You’ll see that your employees will respond positively.

Enthusiasm is Contagious

Encourage passion for the work you do.  When you show enthusiasm about something, it is contagious.  Show enthusiasm for a new project and be passionate about the ideas your team has.  Encouraging a passionate and enthusiastic attitude about work is a great way to inspire creativity in your team.

Follow Through

Finish what you start.  Don’t be the kind of business leader that is always giving motivational speeches.  Whenever you have a realistic chance of closing out the execution of a stated goal, personally see that it gets done.  That will tell colleagues and clients that you mean business.  It also sets the bar for what you expect of those under you.

People are Watching

As a leader, remember that people may want to try to emulate you.  That’s why you should be the best leader that you can be.  Give them great qualities to mimic.  Calm is one trait that somebody may mimic, but they may also mimic panic if that’s what you normally express.  The same goes with traits like intelligence and kindness.  Be the best that you can be so that others can “follow your lead”.

Lead by Example

Be a good example for your team.  Just like the parents of a family, you are who your team looks up to in your organization.  Do not talk negatively about the company you work for or your bosses to your team.  It sets a horrible example and may come back to haunt you.

Clear Communications

Clear communication.

Communication with your team is imperative.  Be sure they know the direction to go and that they know of any changes.  Failure to communicate essential information to key people is counterproductive to the common goals of the team.  Besides, poor communication will make your team look bad, especially if customers ask questions.

The Wrap-up

You probably already know that most organizations have a mission, values, and goals, but what about leaders?  As you work to develop your leadership abilities, it helps to define these qualities for yourself.  What do hope to accomplish in your role?  What personal qualities and values will you use to make important decisions regarding your goals? Bear these in mind as you map out your career plans.  Leadership isn’t just about ordering others around. It is a serious honor and must be taken seriously.  You should strive to be fair, open and concerned for the members if your group.  Use the tips from above to help you develop into an admirable and respected leader in your group.
