5 steps to rise above worry and self-doubt.

New jobs, new projects and especially new living locations can be exciting but each of these can be a breeding ground for those two evil neighbors: worry and self-doubt.  During our time on earth we seek change to improve our lives.  Change is sometimes also forced upon us by life circumstances and by actions of others.  These 3 dramatic life changes are all high on the scale of stress factors.  With all that is going on around us we thought it would be helpful to discuss these 5 steps to rise above worry and self-doubt.

5 Steps to Rise Above Worry and Self-Doubt

Staying a step ahead of the negativity.

Let’s think of survival and coping with worry and self-doubt during times of change as an adventure video game.  Right now, you are a step ahead of the new game character because you are not going into this new adventure completely blind.  You may not have the complete picture of the landscape but you already have some important sources of information and resources.  As you get to know the lay of the land you will find more sources for what you need.  These will help you to control your situation and complete the task and objectives required to achieve your goals.

1.  Plan your work and work your plan.

As has been said many times.  People never plan to fail, they fail to plan.  Just like creating a budget for time or for your money.  A plan is essential for success and providing a path to follow to achieve your stated goals.  This plan to accomplish our goals needs to be realistic and the planning phase helps us to determine what we can do ourselves and what we need help with.  Like in the video game where we can acquire a sidekick to help us accomplish difficult tasks or inform us as to the lay of the land we are about to enter.

Let us get back to the planning.

Your plan tells us what needs to be accomplished and stipulates the timeline.  Set those date benchmarks and adjust if necessary.  The plan you develop takes an inventory of resources we have and those we need.  When implemented, your plan gives you something to follow and not deviate from.  Keep working the plan and stay focused on the items which need to be accomplished to achieve the plan and goals.

Here is a piece of advice from the Bible about not wavering and staying focused on the path of our plan:

“Then why, you may be asking, did I change my plan? Hadn’t I really made up my mind yet? Or am I like a man of the world who says yes when he really means no?” – 2 Corinthians 1:17

Keep positive thoughts in mind.

Maintaining positive thoughts.

Step two shows us how we can document and categorize the information which will be used in our plan.  We need to realize that as we work the plan we update it as we acquire new information and assets.  Keep in mind people can give us information but they also become assets to working our plan.  In previous blog posts we have shared the valued principles found in the book of Proverbs.  This one is appropriate, Proverbs 19:21 says:

Many are the plans in one’s heart but the purpose of the Lord will prevail.  Another place in the Holy Bible shows us what God’s plan is for us; Jeremiah 29:11 says: For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”

2.  Make a list of who, what, when and where.

This is taking time to prepare for what is coming.  Some of us may budget our money and budgeting one’s time and knowledge is similar to budgeting money.  Let’s apply this worry reduction strategy for moving into a new city for work.

  • Who:  This could be you, or the new home you are moving into.  Maybe even your service provider.
  • What:  Finding Internet and Utility providers.
  • When:  Possession date and how many weeks are required for internet and utility connections?
  • Where:  Not only your new address but also where the services are from.

Knowledge and Wisdom

Knowing how to apply the knowledge (wisdom) is vital for plan success.  This step will show you what you need and enables you to find out your sources of resources and information.  We do not want to skip or skimp on this information gathering step.  Proverbs 21:5 says: Good plans in the hands of the diligent will certainly lead to advantage and prosperity.  However, everyone who is hasty will surely come to poverty.

It is as important to find out what leads a person to poverty as much as what leads to prosperity.  Therefore, we must acquire wisdom and knowledge to avoid worry and self-doubt.  When we know what we are doing and how and why we are doing something this leads us forward in confidence and provides security of thought so that worry cannot get in and sabotage our mindset and plans. Let’s continue talking about the 5 Steps to Rise Above Worry and Self-Doubt.

3.  Acquire Wisdom and Knowledge.

The three situations mentioned in the introduction all provide an opportunity to cause worry and self-doubt because they require you to acquire new wisdom, understanding and knowledge.

“Without counsel plans go awry, but in the multitude of counselors they are established.” – Proverbs 15:22

Having the Right People with You.

5 Steps to Rise Above Worry and Self-Doubt
Having the right people around you is important.

Find the right people and resources that will help you establish your plans and succeed at your goals.  Some in your network will help you, others will drag you down.  Make a list of those two groups of people.  Some will seem to help you at first, but soon you will discover those people were in it to win it for themselves, not you.  List the positives and negatives beside each person’s name and this will paint a picture of who will help you and who will distract you.

This list below will help to show you the asset class of the people around you and hopefully prevent you from being only part of another’s advancement strategy.  A great wisdom principle from the Holy Bible is found in Amos 3:3

“How can two walk together unless they are agreed?”

We always walk in the direction of our group of peers.

Make a strategy list for acquiring wisdom and knowledge:

  • What are your knowledge deficits?
  • What are your knowledge resources?
  • Who can help you acquire more necessary information?
  • How can your knowledge base be increased?

Take a minimum wage position as an example of a worrisome situation.  The person in that position is dying financially for a lack of knowledge.  If the individual who is suffering from low wages gains knowledge and wisdom they can help themselves acquire a higher paying job.  Maybe the knowledge gained enables one to become a carpenter.  This new knowledge then helps the person start a side hustle, or even a new business building custom desks or gift items.  Perhaps another learns best practices for editing videos and can get work from a site like Fiverr.

4.  Know Your Support System.

Who are your allies?  Where are your people that will support you during this time of change?  Who can you go to, to acquire new knowledge or emotional support?  Those who are around each of us are vital to the accomplishments we want for ourselves.  People can be the cause of our worry and self-doubt, or they can be a power source that propels us forward, away from our insecurities.  People can provide us with knowledge, emotional support, and resources.  Those are members of our support staff.  They encourage, they build up, and can notice what hindrances we have that we need to remove.  The respect and kind words from members of our tribe will propel us and help us to move forward.

“Plans are established by getting advice, and with guidance one successfully engages in battle.” – Proverbs 20:18

We don’t have to go the road to success alone.

There is Divine help available from our loving creator to lead us to those who will help guide and support.  It is also helpful to pray that we will avoid worry and self-doubt.

“Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun: There is one alone, without companion: He has neither son nor brother. Yet there is no end to all his labors, nor is his eye satisfied with riches. But he never asks, “For whom do I toil and deprive myself of good?” This also is vanity and a grave misfortune.

The Value of a Friend

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.  For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one be warm alone  though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.  And a threefold cord is not quickly broken”. – Ecclesiastes 4:7-12

5.  Steadfast in thought.

In this discussion of the 5 Steps to Rise Above Worry and Self-Doubt, mindset is a key point friends.  I placed our thoughts and mindset at number 5 because everything discussed above gives us what we need to stay steadfast in our mind and thoughts.  Being single focused and not double minded is a key to banishing worry and self-doubt.

1 Kings 18:21: Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you hesitate between two opinions?

With the path planned, the resources known, and knowledge acquired, we can keep our mind, thoughts and emotions on the appropriate thoughts.  When functioning with a positive mindset we are not worried how things will work out.  We will be prepared for the unknown and banish the insecure thoughts that come from ignorance and lack.  Prosperity is often associated with peace, Christianity teaches Jesus offers the utmost peace.

Peace of Mind.

Resources for peace of mind.

Peace of mind walks along with wisdom, prosperity, and knowledge (understanding).  When we have our plan and all that goes along with it we receive the fruit of that.  This will provide steadfastness to our mind, will and emotions.  Helping us keep our mind inhospitable to worry and self-doubt.

In Conclusion:

Worry and self-doubt cannot survive when we have knowledge, wisdom and a plan for success.  These evil-doers will pop in to see what is going on and if there is a place of habitation for them they would be happy to find a seat.  These two have a lot of baggage which is not beneficial for our plans for success and prosperity.  As the information we have presented here, is put into practice, the worry and self-doubt will find your life and your plans inhospitable.  While they will try to stick around and disrupt your life, they will not find a place suitable and so they will move on.

Your plan and path to success.

The path to success is not an easy one.  Worry and self-doubt will try to stay around you.  We decided to develop these 5 steps to rise above worry and self-doubt because prosperity requires something of you.  The path and focus of your plan will be narrow, steep and challenging.  Patience in affliction, perseverance in your plan, and persistence in thought and character.

“Family, as an example of patience in affliction, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. See how blessed we consider those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen the outcome from the Lord. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.”  James 5:10-11

With the correct strategy you can plan to succeed and not fail.  You can get up and make your own way regardless of those around you.  You are able to acquire new knowledge that will help you earn more and become less dependent on those who hold control over your life.
