Your Side Hustle – Its a Personal Thing…

Person looking at a magazine.

A side hustle is a personal thing, something not everyone understands. Friends may not understand, and family members might not get it. These who misunderstand, we’ll call them the “9-5ers” they think it’s “jammy-jams” time the moment they cross the threshold into their comfy home zone.

But not you; it might not even be about the money, maybe it’s your creativity or your drive, goal setting, or the sense of accomplishment – or the money! Your quest is for more than the cubical confines, and what the steady cheque has to offer, and the side hustle is your ticket to personal satisfaction.

It is the limited thinkers who would believe and relish the fact that there are no opportunities outside your 9-5 job. For them, the now is the paycheque and the future is the promised pension plan.  The Side Hustlers, well they see that their personal potential needs a bigger outlet. The Side Hustler has needs that can’t be fulfilled by the 8 hours as a keyboard commando for XYZ Corp. That’s a “Nope” right there… This Hombre needs to be fruitful and to multiply.  These special ones, the members of the SH crew, have creativity, passion, and ideas that if focused, and harness with personal pride and discipline, could conquer their own part of God’s green earth and Hell’s half acre.

This sheet helps each of us to refine our goals and document how we can follow a successful path to completing our goals.  They don’t just have to be about Side Hustles and extra income opportunities, these sheets work for personal goals such as leaving bad habits behind, a new car, a real estate purchase, or even family vacations.  The possibilities for success are endless.

Side Hustlers Resist The Average –

Your life belongs to you, don’t give it to another. The Boss might get your life-energy during your night shift, or your day side hours in the call centre, but the money they give you in exchange funds what you really want to do and where you see yourself in the future.

Seven Slick Steps to Start Your Side Hustle

It is true that it is never too late to start.

  1. Document your vision or goals, and make it plain for you to see.

      1. We have a Goal setting worksheet here:
      2. Using a form like this helps to articulate and visualize what you know right now of your goal for a Side Hustle.
  2. Identify Your Interests and Skills.

    1. What is that task that you enjoy and would even do it for free?  Having a side hustle that is enjoyable will make it easier to stick with it when you encounter obstacles and rejection.
    2. Remember the 80 – 20 rule… Find out what is the 20% of the work on your goal that will help get you the 80% of the way there.
    3. What needs do you already know how to fill?  Let’s say for example you are thinking of providing a neighbourhood laundry service and you may be an experienced mother and know that a few new moms in your church have laundry piles they can’t get to. But they may be willing to pay someone to pick up the clothing et al., launder, fold and deliver back to their home.  I had an employee who brought his laundry to a local shop every week. At the end of the day, and $25.00 dollars later he picked up his clean clothing.  At first I thought, that’s nuts, then I tried it.  They gave me a list of choices, such as: detergents and fabric softeners, which articles of clothing I wanted hung, which ones could be dried, and which ones I wanted folded.
  3. Set Goals.

    1. There is that old adage: What you focus on your move towards.  It works for race car drivers, painters, and goal setters alike.  Don’t want to hit the tree? Don’t look at it and you wont hit it – look away from the things you don’t want to go towards.  Painters look where they want the paint to go, same thing with the gun range, same thing with goal setting… Want to lose weight? Stop looking at Candy bars and soda pop. Focus on what you want and go towards them.  That is why friends and life partners need consideration when choosing and being around.  Unless you make a conscious decision not to, you will always go in the same direction as your friends.  Don’t like the direction your life is headed? – you may need new friends.
    2. Habakkuk 2:2 – “And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.” Write YOUR goals and the vision you have of your future so that you can run toward and accomplish your desired end result. make the information clear, make it bold print if you have to and ask yourself: “What’s In It For Me?”  That is the Worlds’ most popular radio station: WII FM. Habileté n’est-ce pas?
  4. Get Rated, Get Reviews, and Social Media.

    1. If people know your work ask them to place a positive comment on your social media.
    2. Customer reviews and positive reviews build trust with potential customers and help to expand your business opportunities.
  5. Keep your Day Job.

    1. The soldier needs the munition factory and the chef needs the farm.  Your day job is the supply side of your goal and side hustle equation.
    2. It is easy to think the day job interferes with the side hustle and you are not wrong, but you can keep them both working separately, and must do both, at least until you can kiss the ball and chain good-bye.
  6. Don’t get Distracted.

    1. Keep the main thing, the main thing, and your side hustle, your secret weapon.
    2. Stay focused on the goal worksheet you completed. In case you missed it, the link is listed below.  Not everyone will understand your desire to plan your work, and work your plan.  Some people are happy to sit at home on a Thursday evening and watch a high-end realty show.  Not you. Nope, you are done watching, and you want to participate.  Your goal is to get your Real Estate license and sell those homes, that’s where you spend your time.
  7. Take Time to Improve your Skills.

    1. Talk to friends and colleagues who have more experience than you: Ask them about difficulties they encountered and how they overcame them.
    2. Find on-line examples of others participating in work similar to your side hustle. Look for information to read about, what situations good and bad others have encountered and how others succeeded where you feel you may be failing.

Keep at it.  Don’t take on the goals of another, they don’t belong to you. Thanks for reading, Rise and Shine…
