Truman said that, “Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers.” Let’s talk about the book that takes 10 months to read and how that relates to the value of reading for the entrepreneur, as well information gained from the written works of others.

Ryan Michler wrote an article at Order of Man which presents some compelling ideas about the benefits of reading.

The benefits of reading:

Reading has creative benefits for all ages of humanity. If other members of creation could read, it would be a benefit to their kingdom as well.
Reading to the in-womb child gives them their first language lessons and sets a foundation for future learning.
Reading to infants introduces them to books and builds the learning foundation making it stronger.
In toddlers it causes the brain to associate the words, ideas and text and their relationship with each other.

Let’s move on to the value of reading for the entrepreneur. The information we gain from the written works of others can be invaluable. Much like how reading to the in-womb child and the toddler enforces and teaches about our language. Reading for the adult teaches, reminds, and guides us as to what we need to know and implement. In this post I want to focus on Og Mandino’s The Greatest Salesman in the World.

The book that takes 10 months to read.

Just how big is this book? A book that takes 10 months to read? Because it is not about the size of the book but the content and quality of the of the ideas presented. Something off the menu at your favourite fast food restaurant can be prepared and consumed in 10 minutes or less. However, a 5 course dinner at a fine Italian restaurant could take hours to prepare and consume. One may chug a beer but sip and savour a serving of Giacomo Conterno Barlolo Montrotino – (a fine wine from old vines that has a long aging time). That particular wine is probably worth the wait.

You get the picture.

In this book author Og Mandino presents the 10 scrolls the reader focusses on each for a month. It is from these 10 scrolls that we at the 5AM Podcast created the 13 sparks for the engine of your day infographic.

Here is Og’s concept of the mission of the wisdom found in the scrolls:

“…seep into my other mind, that mysterious source which never sleeps, which creates my dreams, and often makes me act in ways I do not comprehend. As the words of these scrolls are consumed by my mysterious mind I will begin to awake, each morning, with a vitality I have never known before. My vigor will increase, my enthusiasm will rise, my desire to meet the world will overcome every fear I once knew at sunrise, and I will be happier than I ever believed it possible to be in this world of strife and sorrow.”

Here are the titles of these valuable scrolls:

I – I will form good habits and become their slave
II – I will greet this day with love in my heart
III – I will persist until I succeed
IV – I am nature’s greatest miracle
V – I will live this day as if it is my last
VI – Today I will be master of my emotions
VII – I will laugh at the world (Keep perspective)
VIII – Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold
IX – I will act now
X – I will pray for guidance

These scrolls and the information and truths behind them enable the reader to choose to direct their lives with the confidence that is obtained from the laws of creation that govern abundance. Og Mandino claimed that those people who yield an abundant harvest from their efforts do so because they choose the destination, and the path to get there. I believe when one follows these 10 scrolls – and using our 13 sparks for the engine of your life. One will achieve their desired results. This actually entails a very important skill. This skill is removing and refusing activities and people who are distracting you from your goal.

Think of it this way:

Your purpose is up to you – up to you to know what it is and how to achieve it. That does mean avoiding the obstacles that stand in your way. Sometimes those are people, sometimes times habits, and often times the expectations of others. It should be sufficient to say that the 10 scrolls from Og Mandino will absolutely help you to focus on your targeted goal and move steadfastly toward it.

Our 13 sparks for the engine of your day is a good way to remember the attitude and ideas we need to steer clear of objections to the completion of our tasks necessary to arrive at our selected destination. We do not act as a ship tossed to and fro by the storms of life. These also help us not to be double minded – always second guess ourselves – or being distracted by entertainment when we need to be studying or crushing it as we meet our weekly sales goals. We are on our way to the destination we have selected. That destination could be to please a parent or friend, or it could be that German made sports car.

In conclusion, the book that takes 10 months to read will change your life and focus. When we choose what we focus on, we can be assured that we will arrive at the object of our affection and attention. Let’s face it, achieving your goal is possible, It results from our perception of our abilities, and most often that comes from what we allow into our minds and bodies.

Preparation to Navigate.

We don’t write the rules of life and success, however when we know what they are we can navigate to the completion of our goals. Og Mandino gave us many books to assist us to understand that we have the ability to achieve what we want. He shows us that we can steer through the distractions of life to get where we need to be. Reading is the best way to prepare ourselves. Reading places the tools in our tool belt. Think, speak, create – these are only done from a place of knowledge. Informed action, you can do it, you will learn and acquire what you need.
